The Kigali Arena officially opened in August 2019, being the 1st 10,000 seater Arena in Kigali that was built to enhance Rwanda’s position as a MICE-destination.
The Kigali Arena serves as a multipurpose facility, as it will continue to host indoor sporting events as well as concerts, festivals, fashion shows, product launch events, executive retreats, board & shareholder meetings, as well as serving as a training centre for sports coaches.
Made up of 3 stories.
The Kigali Arena is approximately 20,000m2, comprising of 13 cafeterias and restaurants, six changing rooms, two rooms for the coaching staff, one fitness centre, a media hall, and a modern doping control room.
This gigantic Arena is the third-largest on the continent in terms of capacity, only bested by the one in Dakar, with a 15,000-seat capacity and the one in Luanda, sitting 12,000. The arena has raised Kigali’s profile as a sports destination
Located in Remera a renown home to small bars and restaurants, which despite hosting Amahoro stadium for years has been lifeless and wilting away, save for one or two establishments that have survived largely on the fact that the area is a well-known red-light district.
For many years squalor has punctuated the surrounding area, until recently when the neighbouring Gisementi caught on with the urbanisation wave that swept other neighbourhoods in Kigali. However, little of Remera’s local economy was attributed to sports and the stadium.
The Arena has now injected life into the neighbourhood, and the bars and eateries that opened here to serve the Turkish contractors have stayed. The opening of the arena means the social nightlife here will thrive.
