Tembera U Rwanda

Tembera U Rwanda campaign was launched by the government of Rwanda through the Rwanda Development Boards back in the year 2016 when statistics showed that only 20% of Rwandans have contributed to tourism revenues buy the time, This prompted the government to launch a national calling on Rwandan to embrace domestic tourism and visit their own beautiful attraction to help spur the sector. The campaign started then with a theme “Tourism for all” which was literally a call for all people to change their mindset of thinking that tourism is only for the rich or international travellers.

The campaign started off with an aim to attain a 25 per cent increase in tourism revenues every year: as the authorities highlighted in their several remarks, this was only achievable with the contribution of Rwandans. The available statistics by then indicated that domestic tourists visiting local destinations were low compared to international tourists.

However the Akagera National Park was showing positive signs as domestic tourists represented 61 per cent of visits, in Nyungwe, domestic visits are at 37 per cent and 14 per cent in Volcanoes National Park. The government launched this call to action to motivate the local travel and tourism operators to consider attracting locals in Rwanda to visit their own attractions and this would undoubtedly boost the sector.

The authorities argued Rwandans that they are the only ones better placed to tell the story of Rwanda more than the international tourists. On this day, we wish to again make this call to all the citizens to travel, experience and share the beauty that Rwanda has to offer.

The government through the Rwanda Development Board identified various priority areas for tourism development known as Destination Management Areas (DMAs) which are designated in Musanze, Akagera, Gisenyi, Kibuye, Nyungwe, Muhazi to facilitate the promotion of the “Tembera u Rwanda” drive.

The authorities argued local tour operators to add more efforts in promoting domestic tourism as a worthwhile investment and the opportunity to discover the country by Rwandans and a big number of local expatriates living in Rwanda who and love adventure and tourism.

Today despite the Covid19 pandemic that literally halted everything, Rwanda’s local tourism has seen a dramatic increase and you can easily see every eager and happy to go spend a weekend in any of the beautiful attractions that their own country has to offer. and we strongly believe this is going to escalate on an impressive scale as soon as the world opens up for trave and tourism.

We have seen a great number of local young travel enthusiasts fresh from school and happily investing in travel and tourism startups whereby their major and target market in the local and hence a great projected increase in Rwanda domestic tourism in a couple of years to come.
