Day 1: Arrival & transfer to Nyungwe Forest

After breakfast, you will be picked up by your driver guide and transfer to Nyungwe Forest National Park located in southwestern Rwanda. Enjoy the scenic drive with great views of Rwanda’s rolling hills, en-route visit some historical sites on the main road and have a stop at Nyanza King's Palace.

King’s Mutara III Rudahigwa’s Palace offers a detailed look into the Rwandan monarchical system and its abolition in the early 1960s due to colonialism. After lunch, we will drive to Nyungwe National Park. Dinner and overnight stay at the lodge. Merina Bay Kivu Lodge.

Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and canopy walk

Nyungwe is one of the oldest rainforests in Africa, covering 1,019 km2 of dense Afromontane forests, bamboo-covered slopes, grasslands and wetlands. The park feeds two of the world’s largest rivers, the Congo and the Nile, and provides 70% of the country’s freshwater. It is also a regional biodiversity hotspot, supporting 1,068 recorded plant species, 322 bird species, 75 known mammal species and 13 different primate species.

Early breakfast; then drive to the reception center for the briefing and together with park guide head to the forest to track Chimpanzee our close relative. You will have a chance to view their daily activities and all their behaviors. After trekking, you will go for the Canopy Walkway. This is 50 meters above the ground level, and 200 meters long.

The dizzying platform is above a steep and deep valley across a massive forest. It allows visitors to view different animal species in the Nyungwe forest spreads over hundreds of square meters and will allow you to be on an “eye-to-eye level” with different primate species, and many bird species. Day3: Waterfalls and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

After breakfast, you will hike to the waterfall. The hike through the waterfall trail will reward you with the sights and sounds of numerous birds and another resident of the forest not forgetting the jaw-dropping Izumo waterfalls. You may enjoy the fall from two main vantage points depending upon how wet you want to get.

The first is at the end of a short spur, which leads to a picnic bench overlooking the fall at 50 meters distance. Small trees partially obscure the view. The fall itself can be reached by descending to the wild river below and then clambering over wet rocks to a large boulder in the middle of the amphitheater.

From here, you’ll be thrillingly close to the bottom of the fall, where it thunders down, full blast, nearly at your feet. You will stay here for a while to enjoy the awesome beauty and power of this one very special place in the heart of Africa. Later you will descend and drive to Volcanoes National Park. Day4: Mountain gorilla trekking

The Volcanoes National Park is located in Musanze district in the northern province of Rwanda. The park is characterized by open grasslands, bamboo forests and swamps and consisting of 125 square kilometers. It is home to one third of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas, golden monkey and a rich mosaic of montane ecosystems. The park sits in one of Africa’s most mountainous zones including five volcanoes – Karisimbi, Sabinyo, Bisoke, Muhavura, and Gahinga.

Mount Kalisimbi being the highest of all at 4,507 meters. The VNP is one of Rwanda's conservation epicenters, home to a number of international organizations and a coveted research ground for primates.

Gorilla trekking tips: wear long trousers and long-sleeved sweaters or shirts while in the forest to avoid insect stings, Waterproof walking shoes or hiking boots, gardening gloves for protection against stinging plants, carry enough water, and camera. Eating, drinking and smoking near the gorillas is forbidden. Photography is permitted, although you must not use flash.

After breakfast, your driver-guide will pick you and drive off to the park’s headquarters. At the park reception, while enjoying a cup of Rwanda’s award-winning coffee, you will be briefed by the ranger about the rules and procedures to be followed while trekking mountain gorillas.

You will be separated into groups of 8 people basing on which gorilla group allocated to you. Accompanied by a highly trained guide and the national park rangers, you will set off for an exhilarating trek through the cultivated foothills of the Virunga’s offers stirring views in all directions.

Then, abruptly, the trail enters the national park, immersing trekkers in the mysterious intimacy of the rainforest, alive with the calls of colorful birds and chattering of the rare golden monkeys. The hike can be quite strenuous but all the more rewarding once you spot the gorillas. You will be allowed to spend one hour with the majestic mountain gorilla.

Watch them carry about their day-to-day routine like the juveniles playing, mothers feeding their young ones and the Silverbacks taking watch. After gorilla trekking you will descend the forest and go for lunch. Later, you will go to Gorilla Guardians where you will meet local people, in their environment, with a taste of our culture and traditions. Dinner and overnight at the Hotel.

Day5: Golden monkey and transfer to Kigali

Day5: Golden monkey and transfer to Kigali
After breakfast, you will go to discover the playful and inquisitive nature of the golden monkey, a beautiful little creature found only in the high-altitude forests of the Volcanoes National Park. Golden monkeys in Rwanda live in the bamboo vegetation towards the base of the volcanoes and habituation has helped them to overcome their initial shyness to accept their daily visit by researchers and tourists. Trekking golden monkeys and gorillas is a similar experience – in a small group of 8 people, you will spend one hour with the monkeys once you find them. The endangered species are very active creatures, and jump from tree to tree which is really interesting. Later after lunch, you will back to Kigali.
